Has it happened to you? Day by day your computer runs slower and slower until it is so frustratingly slow you can hardly bother to log on?
I used to wait until my wife’s son Barnaby visited and gaze in wonder as he weaved his magic and made my P.C or Web Book. useable again. That was until I thought ‘How hard can it be?’ and I asked “Barny, how can I make my computer run faster myself without ruining every weekend you spend with us?”

I was right, it isn’t difficult at all, so if your systems are slow and sluggish, if they freeze up here are a few tips.

MS Config – 4 minutes invested – hours and hours saved.

Tucked away, where only techies look, there’s a simple but powerful tool, called msconfig, It is free, Microsoft builds this directly into Windows. In this article I’ll show you how to activate and use msconfig to speed your systems and make them a pleasure to use again..

Do you have any idea how many programs are running on your systems without your knowledge?
I was shocked when I opened msconfig about two dozen programs were being opened every time I switched on. or if they weren’t switched on they were ‘live’ waiting to be used. Some of them I would never use at all, some just once in a blue moon.
By shutting down many of these unnecessary programs, my computer is now running much much faster and with far fewer hangs.

It doesn’t take long, it isn’t difficult, and there is little or no risk of mucking things up*When you do need them most take no more than a second or two to load manually.

Don’t the program writers love to make things sound complex
msconfig is really just a simple checklist of the programs loaded onto your system when the computer starts up. It lets you select and de-select those programs you’d like to run at start up and you don’t need many!

You may wonder, if you don’t actually need them all the time why are they loaded at startup in the first place? The answer is ‘helpful’ software suppliers have placed them there when you downloaded their programs so they are instantly available for you to use but many if not most simply do not need to run at start up.

A typical example is real-time player, which gets placed in start-up by default when it’s first installed. By de-selecting real-time player in msconfig, you will return huge valuable resources to your computer and speed up your start up plus, real-time player will start only when you need it, not before!

This is what you do to start your declutter

    1. Click the Windows Start button in the lower left corner.

    2. Click Run.

    3. Type “msconfig” (without the quotes) in the box as shown below.

    4. Click OK or hit the Enter key.

    msconfig startup screen

    msconfig startup screen

Select the startup tag – ignore the other tabs: Playing around in there can cause BIG problems!

This box shows all the programs available to start up when the computer starts. Those checked with a tick actually do start as you open up the computer.

Uncheck the boxes of programs you do not want at start up (most of them!)
Leave antivirus, Antispyware, firewall and pop up blocker to run everything else can easily be opened just when you need it.

Click on apply stage 1 done

Now click on the ‘services’ tab and you will see the screen below.

    msconfig services screen

    msconfig services screen

Click the box to select hide all Microsoft service.

Then go through the list and deselect any that you do not use or use rarely use , relax, they can be reselected at any time in the future

After you finish making changes in msconfig, click Apply then OK. then Yes to restart your computer.

After you reboot, you may see a popup Window letting you know that you have made changes with msconfig. There will be a check box that you may select to prevent this popup from displaying in the future. I suggest you check this box, and then just close the Window.

That’s it! Now just enjoy the results of your new found knowledge and marvel at just how quick you system is for just this small housekeeping chore
